Our history

Bringing high quality medicines to the world since 1901

The company known today as Teva started as a small business in Jerusalem in 1901. The young company, named after its pharmacist founders, Salomon, Levin and Elstein Ltd., distributed imported medicines throughout the region using mule trains and camel caravans.

Over the following decades, the company’s growth was spurred as demand for locally produced medicines grew. In 1976, the company became Teva (the Hebrew word for “nature”) Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd.

Teva grew significantly across the globe through numerous successful acquisitions which integrated and enhanced our expertise in innovative and generic medicines, as well as new therapeutic areas and markets. Today, Teva is among the top 15 global pharmaceutical companies – a world leader in generic and specialty medicines.

We've been around longer than the NHS, and that's going back a long way!

  • We can trace our UK history back to Yorkshire in the 1930s when we were known as APS, or Approved Prescription Services.
  • In 1996 APS Berk was acquired by Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. For Teva this represented a valuable entry into the UK market.
  • In 2004 we changed our name to Teva.
  • Teva has acquired a number of businesses over the years, bringing together expertise in innovative and branded medicines,
    as well as generic medicines.

Our growth has continued with the acquisitions of ratiopharm, Cephalon, NuPathe, Auspex, Rimsa and Actavis Generics (amongst others),
bringing many innovative and branded products to Teva's range.

Our future looks bright

"We are looking at healthcare options that are fit for the future, like new technologies, innovative devices, and a fresh approach to services.
We are partnering with technology, digital and e-health companies to help make treatment options that are fit for the future".
