On International Women’s Day, we turn the spotlight on our Teva site in Runcorn Cheshire which is proud of its female leaders and diverse workforce.

It’s International Women's Day (March 8) – a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. This year’s campaign theme is #BalanceforBetter which is a call to action for accelerating gender balance across the world. 

Gender balance is close to our hearts here at Teva, especially at our Runcorn site which is proud of its female leaders and diverse workforce. Teva Runcorn actively promotes equal opportunities in the workplace and is also a member of Stonewall, which campaigns for the equality of lesbian, gay, bi and trans people across Britain.

Claire D’Abreu-Hayling, who is Senior Vice President of Global Sterile Research and Development, said: “I like working at Teva because it’s given me the opportunity to be who I am. I am a West Indian. I am a black, female professional and in my previous jobs I experienced a lot of stereotyping.” 

“I joined Teva Runcorn in 2006 because the company promoted a gender-balanced culture and I found that I could grow into being who I am, both in terms of my values and in terms of my ethical beliefs which has really helped my career to flourish.”

Claire added: “I don’t think we have enough women in industry. I frequently attend conferences and big meetings and very often I’m the only female, or the only black professional female in the room. I think we also need to encourage more girls and young women to do sciences and to excel in STEM (Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects.” 

“I think women leaders bring a lot of value to the workplace because we see things from a different perspective. Our industries are not as rich and exciting as they could be because there just aren’t enough women within large organisations.”

“Thankfully Teva is well represented. I’ve always had excellent female leaders and in my team in particular, three of the five leaders are female which is great.”

We invest heavily in our workforce

The Teva Runcorn site employs around 500 people, working in a variety of roles encompassing everything from quality assurance, quality control, manufacturing operations, research and development, engineering, microbiology and packaging. 

What makes the business unique is the depth of talent within its organisation; every single person is degree-educated and highly skilled in their chosen field. This is because our Runcorn site focuses on ‘difficult to make’ sterile products and medicines, such as Teva’s Copaxone® (glatiramer acetate). Copaxone® is a pre-filled syringe medicines used to treat multiple sclerosis - a condition affecting the central nervous system, that affects your nerves and it’s caused when your immune system isn’t working properly.

In 2017, Runcorn signed-up to the STEM Ambassador programme, not only to support the professional development of its current, highly skilled workforce, but also to give the company a chance to reach out to communities and educational institutions to support and encourage the next generations of STEM students and employees. Runcorn now combines working as external STEM Ambassadors with its internal professional development pathways to drive high levels of engagement and equal opportunity.

These are exciting times for Teva Runcorn as the site grows to meet the increasing demands for biologic medicines and biosimilar medicines. 01

And it’s an exciting period of history where the world expects balance. This International Women’s Day is about noticing its absence and celebrating its presence.

In the UK, gender pay reporting legislation requires employees with 250 or more employees to publish statutory calculations every year showing how large the pay gap is between their male and female employees. Whilst Teva Runcorn’s demographic is heavily weighted male to female (as is typically seen in most manufacturing industries), we know that the company’s structured pay system and STEM Career Pathways mean that pay levels are set irrespective of gender, race, ethnicity or age. What’s more, Teva Runcorn is proud to have a Site Leadership Team that is 50% male/female and has a reasonable balance of male to female across its wider management structure. 

Balance is not a women's issue, it's a business issue. Gender balance is essential for economies and communities to thrive. It’s about creating gender-balanced boardrooms, a gender-balanced government, gender-balanced media coverage, a gender-balance of employees and giving equal opportunities to all.

    Biological medicines offer treatment options for patients with chronic and often disabling conditions such as diabetes, autoimmune disease and cancers.

    Biological medicines contain active substances from a biological source, such as living cells or organisms (human, animals and microorganisms such as bacteria or yeast) and are often produced by cutting-edge technology.

    A biosimilar is a biological medicine highly similar to another already approved biological medicine (the 'reference medicine'). Biosimilars are approved according to the same standards of pharmaceutical quality, safety and efficacy that apply to all biological medicines.
